Federico Faggin, the designer of the Intel 4004 — the first single-chip CPU — and a pioneer in silicon technology, has presented his theory of Quantum Information Panpsychism, asserting that consciousness is fundamental to the universe, rather than just a brain function. He believes consciousness exists in a conscious quantum field, and our bodies are like "drones" operated by it.
Faggin's personal experiences led him to challenge the materialist view, arguing that the current scientific paradigm, which sees humans as machines, is flawed and could lead to issues with powerful AI. He explained that every cell in our body is a "part-whole," containing the potential knowledge of the entire organism. He distinguishes between cells, which are "quantum-classical" entities connected by quantum fields, and microprocessors, which are purely classical.
He posits that quantum information is the fundamental reality and that free will is represented by the "collapse of the wave function" in quantum physics. Faggin also suggests that meaning resides within the conscious field, not in information itself.
He proposes a new postulate for reality: the "totality of what exists" is dynamic, holistic, and "wants to know itself," implying consciousness and free will are foundational. He believes his theory is testable and could lead to a future where humanity better understands consciousness and fosters cooperation.
"In short, his theory can certainly be interpreted as an attempt to bridge the gap between the material and spiritual worlds."
